So apparently Karla 'wasn't feeling too well' and 'needed some time away from it all' and whatever other rubbish Merlin had been spouting. Arthur still thought this was the worst bloody idea since that time he shot that unicorn. No good would come of it.

In the end, Merlin had insisted, and in the end, Arthur had very grudgingly capitulated, but not before setting up a list of rules for the little witch that reached roughly the size of a small mountain. 'Do not spend more than ten hours a day in the castle', for example, and 'only speak when spoken to' and 'for god's sake, do NOT do that thing you do, you know the one I'm talking about'.

There was also something in there about the proper cut and hemline of servants' dresses, just in case she decided to try and tempt any of the knights. (He had compromised on the list! Look, wear a shapeless sack had been scratched out! As had pretend to be a bag of potatoes!)

Arthur liked being thorough.

Which was also why he'd invited two other people who had a bit more experience dealing with these issues. Just to be certain.

[[ for those who be arriving, and merlin. ]]

"While I appreciate the compliment implicit in the idea that I am some kind of smouldering temptress who has to wear a sack to avoid carnal notice," Karla said, still going through the list, "I assure you I have no intention of flirting with anyone here in Camelot."

A) She still had a boyfriend. B) Why would she want to?

"I assume I'll be spending the other fourteen hours somewhere with Merlin?" she added, not even bothering to hide her amusement. "Or should I spend it aimlessly wandering the town unsupervised and unchaperoned?"

Katchoo tried to sneak a look at the list at the first opportunity.

"Good frikkin' god, Arthur. About the only thing you didn't list on there was breathing." She gave him a look that was half amused and half horrified.

Katchoo crossed her arms over her chest and raised one eyebrow in a very deliberate, sardonic gesture. "Anyone ever told you you were up for an award for having confidence in other people, Pendragon?"

No?

Quelle surprise.

. . . please to remember who Katchoo was dating, Arthur -- it adjusted her sense of proportion on Murphy's Law.

(No offense, Francine.)

"And I'm trying to decide if I should be offended that I never got a list like that," she told him, all mock-sweetness.

Putting people's lives at risk just to spite someone was the kind of thing Darcy did.

. . . that said nothing about whether Katchoo was capable of it.

"Stealing all my fun again?" she mock-complained. "Geez. Remind 'em to keep their hands to themselves, then." And she wouldn't have to try to peel their faces off via their nostrils, because hi, that was gross.

"What about Katchoo?" Karla asked with a wide smile. "She and I have bonded, you know. She knows just as much about Camelot as Francine does. I'm sure we could have lots of fun together."

Those nightmares are what you get for that 'opening her mouth' crack, Pendragon. It's hardly Karla's fault that Camelot males can't appreciate a female with spirit.

Karla was more than happy to share the list with Katchoo. "Please note you're not on the list of acceptable chaperones," she said, completely innocently. "I'm sure it's some kind of error on Arthur's part."

Hey! Did you ever stop to think that maybe Karla wouldn't be so quick to make mischief for Arthur if he wasn't so intent on being a prat all the time?

"The break was nice," Katchoo said, deadpan. "But with some of the stupid required intro courses out of the way, I can take more interesting classes this semester. Too bad the level of pretentious goes up along with the course number."

Well, obviously this was why Katchoo had Karla's back on this.

"Sweetie, I'm not on the list of acceptable anything," she drawled with no small amount of self-satisfaction. "It drives him nuts."

"Funny how your version of looking after me involves a lot of floor-scrubbing and window-washing," Karla mused, not buying that for a minute. "And how come I'm not even allowed to step foot in the kitchen, huh? Merlin says the cook likes to give him food!"

"From this list, I don't think I am, either," Karla declared. "I'm pretty sure he assumes I'm going to somehow light the castle on fire just by stepping inside."

Which was just silly. It's not like it was a church or something.

Karla wasn't entirely certain how to argue this. On the one hand, free food, and eating as much as she normally did almost certainly broke the 'never, ever, under any circumstances at all, draw attention to yourself for any reason' rule. On the other hand, she didn't really want to call herself scrawny, even if she mostly was.

Ish.

She was getting better!

"I still don't understand why I can't go into the kitchen anyway," she grumbled as a compromise.

Francine's experience with these issues involved the need for sugar and leavened wheat products. So, um.

At least it was a giant box of cupcakes this time, and not one single cake?

Katchoo took a moment to entertain herself with the idea of Arthur going toe-to-toe with her Life Drawing professor.

It was a very long moment; there was a lot of entertainment to be had there.

"It's fine," she assured him. "I just tune 'em out and draw the naked people."

"Well, of course," Katchoo intoned dryly. "Whaddya expect from someone who's never been inside a castle bef--"

She snapped her fingers overdramatically.

"Oh, wait."

For 'oh, wait,' read silly Arthur.

"Did you see the part where he specified how long my hems had to be?" Karla asked. "Like I'll be twitching my skirts at any of the males who live here."

Besides, if there was something Karla and Arthur (and even Rilla) could agree with, it's that short skirts were highly improper.

Sookie.

"I still think it would have been more fun to pretend to be a visiting noblewoman from somewhere far away."

For a brief, wistful moment Katchoo envied her that: the ability to find innocent (mostly) fun in playing a role that way.

"Harder to pull off," she allowed, not really caring how much she let on this far away from prying squirrel ears. Besides, it was Karla, and after Briarwood she figured the girl had earned the privilege. "No one notices the servants going in and out; nobody cares enough to ask about where they're from or any of that crap since they're not important enough. Pretend to be someone at the top of the ladder, though, and you're paintin' a big-ass target on yourself. If your story isn't waterproof, all the gossip getting around'll find the holes in it sooner'n you want."
