Within the throne room, for breakfast, Catrina gave King Uther a gift. A necklace, with a heavy amulet, that she promised him was from her father. (It wasn't.) A token of her love, she had said.

On the other side of the castle, Arthur didn't have the foggiest clue. He was busy getting dressed.

The day ahead would be... different.

"I have gathered you here today," Uther began, holding up his other hand to command attention. It was what he did best, after all, and the entire room was quiet as a mouse in his presence. "To make an announcement. It must not have escaped your notice that the Lady Catrina has sought refuge here for some time now."

Lady Catrina grasped his hand warmly. "Your Majesty has been more than kind to me."

Uther allowed himself a brief, loving smile at her (somewhere, you could hear Arthur puking into his mouth a little). "We have been courting during this period," he announced, with much fanfare. "And now I would announce our engagement. Lady Catrina and I are to be married next week."

And there was Catrina's hand again, clinging more tightly to his hand. Her eyes skittered over the audience, and settled, for one dark moment, on Arthur.

As if she had come to a decision there, she suddenly leaned over, and whispered something in Uther's ear.

"Ah," said Uther, coming upright again. "...Tomorrow, pardon. We shall be wed tomorrow. There will be a feast."

You could hear the servants groaning already.

It was good for Francine and everyone standing anywhere near her that she didn't have anything in her mouth when he said that.

Hopefully the vague exhalation that meant OMFG but didn't actually have any words would be taken as .... um. A really quiet cheer?

Oh, Katchoo didn't like this. She didn't like it at all; it felt so damn much like the kind of assignment one of Darcy's operatives would've been sent on.

Thank the zombie baby Jesus for long sleeves on her dress; hidden inside them, the knuckles on both clenched fists had gone white.

Well, this whole marriage thing could just not happen. So Merlin was doing his very dramatic and not at all flaily walk down the hallway to get to researching with Gaius.

"Merlin?" Jonas hissed, softly. "Merlin, please-- Merlin, I need your help..."

AH, CREEPY!

"...My help?" Merlin asked after looking around for a moment. Because this was totally a good idea. And trustworthy!

"It's her." Jonas sculked out of the darkness, looking terrified and anguished. "Her, you know what she is, Master Merlin, she's so terrible, she's been keeping me-- keeping me locked up all this time."

"She is?" GOD DAMN IT, MERLIN. YOU ARE SO EASILY TRICKED.

"Look," Jonas said, desperately, pulling back his sleeves so that Merlin could see the cuff marks on them. "She is planning evil tonight, Master Merlin. We must stop it."

"I--" Oh, he was hurt too! Might as well toss a baby animal into the mix and make it more easy to believe. "--where?"

Hook, line and sinker.

"The catacombs," he said, in hushed tones, and began to move. To walk. To run. To... well, it was a bit slithery, really. "We must move quick!"

Merlin glanced back, wondering if he ought to tell someone first, but... What's the worst that could happen?

"Let's go then."

Arthur was going to wind up yelling at him quite a bit once all was said and done.

But Jonas simply plowed on through the hallways and down into the catacombs, not stopping until he'd made it to a small, yet pugnant, cave. He pointed at the entrance. "Within lie her objects of power," he whispered. "I cannot get any closer. I have been cursed to stay away..."

Merlin just nodded, charging on in like... well, like Arthur would. Once inside he found absolutely nothing.

"Are you sure this is the right spot?"

"Yes," said Jonas, smiling. "I believe it is."

He held up his hand at the entranceway. He glanced up at the ceiling. And he spoke words, magical words that made the earth tremble.

Literally.

HOW COULD HE HAVE BEEN TRICKED LIKE THIS?

"No!" Merlin shouted, forced to take a step back or get crushed by rocks. Because he was an idiot and only natural selection could cure this one.

Which made no sense at all. Why not just kill the one person who might be able to stop them? Why imprison them in an overly elaborate, easily escapable catacomb?

All he had to do is pull out his phone and...

"No signal?!" Oh, he was going to be pruned from the evolutionary tree.
