The whole mess was over and done with, and now Arthur had even managed to sweep the last scraps of trouble under the rug. It had been trying, and it had been bloody dangerous, and how could he have been so stupid to begin with?

He had all this adrenaline still coursing through his body, and the morning's training had only taken the edge off. So now that things had been settled, and spoken through with his father, he was in his room. Prying bits of rock off the wall with his sword.

While brooding.

This was a spectacular combination.

Arthur pulled a face. "Agreed," he said. He cast a look in Merlin's direction.

There was another glance before Merlin slowly took a step closer to him. Just one step for now.

Arthur didn't move, but he uncrossed his arms, dropping his hand loosely onto the table beside him, his body half-turning towards Merlin in the process. "Merlin, come here, you impossible imbecile," he sighed.

"You could always come here too, you know." But Arthur was lucky that Merlin was making his way over. So damn lucky.

"Shut up," Arthur told him, expressively, and reached for him as soon as he was close.

It wasn't a hug! Mostly.

It was totally a hug now. Deal with it, Arthur. "Are you going to stop savaging the poor wall?"

"I think it looks better this way," Arthur argued, sliding one arm around his waist.

"Are you planning to carve your name into it next?" Merlin asked Arthur's shoulder. Because it was right there in front of his face.

"Don't be stupid," Arthur said. "My name will be on plenty of things in the future. The wall's a bit plain."

And then he did not at all kiss Merlin's cheek.

Because that would be girly. So, so girly. "Of course," Merlin replied with a grin. "Books and movies..."

"I was thinking more a nice big throne," Arthur muttered, "Maybe above the doors of a new palace..."

He pulled away, because he was not that much of a bloody girl, thank you.

"You'll try to be more careful?"

"I am always careful," Arthur informed him, pulling away from the table.

So he could tug Merlin towards the bed.

"Liar," Merlin grumbled, moving along with him. "It's a little early for a nap, you know."

"I know," Arthur said, pushing him at the bed. "I have no interest in napping."

Merlin flopped down on the bed, rolling his eyes at Arthur for that. "Come on then."

Arthur rolled his eyes right back at him, but flopped down alongside. "You really are an idiot," he said, mostly for form, and his voice was soft as he did so.

"And you're a prat," Merlin replied. For form. Then rolled closer to him, hand on Arthur's chest.

Arthur reached up and placed his hand over Merlin's, turning his head towards him. "For a moment, I thought I was really going to have to break you out of the dungeons," he said, muted.

"I'd break out on my own," Merlin assured him. "With suitably terrifying sparkles to show off all the magic."

"I might have had to come with you," Arthur told the bed, reaching out with his other hand to touch Merlin's cheek.

"How far gone are we if we try to burn innocents at the stake, Merlin?" Arthur asked, fingers fluttering over his cheekbone. "If we attempt to burn our greatest allies?"
